REVIEW
My dad had this album when I was growing up, and it was pretty much my introduction to Maynard (and any type of jazz music for that matter). I always liked how you could see the photographer's reflection in Maynard's trumpet bell on the album jacket. A great set of standards, solid arrangements, a powerful band, and MF in his prime…exciting stuff. The first two tracks will have you hooked, I guarantee. MF's octave doubling on "Tis Autumn" will have you shaking your head in disbelief. I recommend this album before any of Maynard's sketchy Columbia output from the 70s. Don is in the trumpet section along with a young Bill Chase.

This album is long out-of-print, but its contents were reissued as part of Mosaic Records' massive box set The Complete Roulette Recordings of Maynard Ferguson, which also has unreleased tracks from the session. Worth seeking out, especially if you are a Maynard fan since this set captures him at his best. The only complaint I have about the box set is that they substituted an sloppy, alternate take of "If I Should Lose You" instead the one found on the vinyl version. WHY?!
