REVIEW
Don's second big band album, finally reissued on CD by Pacific Jazz and Bob Belden.
The first three songs on the CD (which are the last
three on the vinyl version) were recorded at the Pacific Jazz Festival, 10/10/66,
and the remaining tracks were recorded at a Shelly's Manne Hole date, 3/27/67.
Highlights are Ruben Leon's bombastic "Barnum's Revenge," Hank Levy's
"Thetis," and a 7/4 reshaping of Eddie Harri's "Freedom Jazz Dance"
featuring a young Tom Scott on saxello.
The CD reissue adds 5 unissued tracks to the original album, all of them taken
from the date at the Manne Hole: a performance of Levy's "Alone" (listed
and announced as "Bossa Nueva Nova") that pre-dates the Electric
Bath version by a few months, two goofy Howlett Smith pieces that Don would
later record for his Shock Treatment album, a straight-forward
arrangement of Jaki Byard's "One Note" (mislabled as the Rodgers &
Hart tune "Johnny One-Note) that really swings, and an alternate version
of "Freedom Jazz Dance" featuring the late Joe Roccisano on alto.
