REVIEW
Here is the debut of the Don Ellis Orchestra..."the historic performance
that stopped the show at the Monterey Jazz Festival." Oddly, "Concerto
for Trumpet" was recorded at the Pacific Jazz Festival, 10/18/66 (I suppose
that's why the word "live" is in quotes on the packaging), but the rest
of the selections are from Monterey, 9/18/66. An impressive outing from the Ellis
band on some of Don's early charts, and Hank Levy's "Passacaglia and Fugue"
(with some great soloing by Don and Tom Scott).
Bob Belden's CD reissue adds three previously unissued selections to the program,
including an early version of "Beat Me Daddy, 7 to the Bar" (which later
ended up on the Shock Treatment album), and the
interesting "Crete Idea," featuring a lengthy solo by Ron Myers on trombone.
