REVIEW
Another good album in a series of solid Roulette recordings Maynard did
in the late fiftiesearly sixties. Don can be heard battling Maynard
and Rick Kiefer on Willie Maiden's exciting jam, "Three More Foxes."
Slide Hampton's lengthy "Newport" is also a highlight, as well
as the original version of "Got The Spirit."
Like most of MF's Roulette releases, this album is long out-of-print,
though its contents were reissued as part of Mosaic Records' massive box
set The Complete Roulette Recordings of Maynard
Ferguson. As a double-whammy, I've been told that the box set is
also out of print now. Shame, because this music deserves to stay in circulation.
On a personal note, I had the opportunity to play Don's trumpet part
on "Three More Foxes" at a recent concert. Dave Stahl and Jim
O'Connor were the other trumpeters.
