REVIEW
Al Kooper's first solo album after departing from Blood Sweat & Tears.
Al was a big fan of Don's and had just produced the Autumn
album a year earlier. I guess Don returned the favor by appearing with
his orchestra on the Traffic cover tune "Coloured Rain." Nothing
really distiguished the Ellis group and its sound on this track
they
serve as nothing more than a glorified backing band. The album as a whole
is similar to BS&T's first effort, complete with another overture
comprised of instrumental versions of the songs therein (and more annoying
laughter as well). Al would also go on to produce the "Eli's Comin'"
track from Don's Underground
album. Just where that track fits into the Ellis chronology is a topic
of much debate.
Another link to the Underground
album is the presence of the vocal group The Blossoms on "Hey Western
Union Man."
